Our Focus – Part 1

Our homes are usually a place of comfort, where we relax – but are you finding yourself home feeling stressed?

We have time to clean out cupboards, watch movies, read books, and be productive. It seems like we have all the time in the world right now, but days just keep flying by with not a lot to show for it. Are you finding that staying connected to people, and keeping up with our constant changing world is sapping your energy and focus?  It is mine.

I found myself not sleeping well this week – and that is saying something, because I usually sleep like a rock. The burden I felt for those canceled graduations, students sent home, businesses struggling, and concerns over the health of loved ones, weighed heavily.  I felt raw, exposed, and vulnerable.

I knew I needed to change my focus.  I’m not comfortable remaining in a low state.  Turning to God’s Word for comfort and guidance, Paul tells us in Philippians 4:8 to focus on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

I began my morning with coffee and Jesus.  Spending time in my devotionals, Bible and prayer helped ground my heart and soul.  Then, I headed out for a brisk walk, with my worship playlist cranked up. 

I’m grateful to live by beautiful green foothills, where I could focus on thanking God for his sovereignty, provision, and grace. It reminded me of Psalm 121 “I lift my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth.”  

I prayed for friends and family, our country, our nation’s leadership, and those serving the sick.  I appreciated the blooming spring flowers, the billowing clouds, and talking with a neighbor. (from a distance of course) Returning home, I felt refreshed and energized.

During the day I chose to read a book by the warm fireplace, instead of having the news on as much.  I took a hot relaxing bubble bath before bed.  That night I slept like a rock again. 

It’s the simple things we can do that make a difference in our attitudes and perspectives. What we focus on matters.

    I love this! Been feeling the same way….In undated with news and feeling like it has consumed my thoughts and days. I have committed to getting outside each day for a hike. We baked chocolate chip cookies and pulled our dusty board games out, playing for the first time in ages. Fun family time!
    It is my goal to start my day with my Bible and end my day with a book (that I had good intentions to read), rather than reading my phone. Small intentional changes at home that hopefully become habits, even after the quarantine is my goal.

      I’m glad you can relate, but most importantly that you are taking steps to include Jesus, exercise, and family fun time in the midst of staying informed and inside. You said it well… “small intentional changes.” Let’s be intentional about transforming for the better: ourselves, our nation and our world.
